By LSCISSM Rachel Irving

The winner of this years POMT Smith Memorial Shield was awarded to LSMTSM Mario Paroli at NTTU-W Leeuwin Barracks recently. The award alternates between NTTU-E and NTTU-W and goes to a worthy recipient from the ATT POMT courses. POMT Shaun Smith, after whom the memorial is named, died in the engine room fire onboard HMAS Westralia in May 1998. LS Paroli is pictured here with the shield.

Naval Technical Training West (NTTU-W) has just celebrated 12 months of training in its new home at Leeuwin Barracks.

Previously located in the suburb of Naval Base, NTTU-W is now in Building 42 at the Barracks, the site of the original chapel at HMAS Leeuwin. The building was later to become the PTIs bar and then lay dormant for some time before it was reopened as NTTU-W.

The first ATT (Advanced Technical Training) course at the new site was conducted in August last year and since then approximately 22 courses of both ATT and ASTC (Advanced Specialist Training Course) have been run.

The building replaces the former site at Naval Base, where ATT training was conducted out of demountables.
All ATT and ASTC for both Marine Technicians and Electronic Technicians in the West are now delivered at Leeuwin Barracks.

Some training components such as welding and fabrication, will continue to be conducted off-site. Likewise, some electrical components will continue to run at HMAS Cerberus.

NTTU-W has become fully integrated with Leeuwin Barracks, with access to all facilities including accommodation and messing.

The OIC NTTU-W LCDR Clare Payne or any staff at NTTU-W may be contacted on (08) 9311 2651 or fax (08) 9311 2595.

All courses are paneled through DSCM.
