Maritime Services (DMS) the supplier of tug and harbour services
to the RAN, are now supporting the Cottage Point-based Australian
Coast Guard Flotilla as a major sponsor of the northern Sydney maritime
rescue unit.
From mid 2003, DMS became a major sponsor in the operation of the
flotilla’s two rescue vessels, used to support the boating communities
of Broken Bay, Pittwater and the nearby northern beaches.
A crew of four mans Coast Guard vessels operating from Cottage Point.
The boats can reach most of the calls for help in Broken Bay in
about ten minutes.
The crews are trained to undertake tows of crippled boats, extinguish
fires afloat and provide first aid.
The General Manager of DMS, Mr Neil Wallace said his company was
proud to establish this association with the Coast Guard at Cottage
Point.
“We trust our financial support will help keep the boats fully fuelled
and maintained to undertake their often dangerous rescue missions,”
he said.
“Our own DMS vessels, normally based in Sydney Harbour travel up
to Broken Bay, into The Pittwater, Cowan Creek and other nearby
bays on a regular basis, generally for training.”
Coast Guard Flotilla Commander Mark Galloway said he was pleased
to welcome DMS as part of the Cottage Point team of volunteers.
“Our small group of volunteers is normally on duty for one Saturday
or Sunday every four weeks,” he said.
“We are always on the lookout for new members.”
Navy News readers in Sydney interested in joining the Cottage Point
unit should call Mark on 02 9457 9327.
