Former RAN sailor Bert Lockwood, a veteran of both world wars, celebrated
his 100th birthday on April 2nd. A party marked the occasion for 60
friends and relatives at the Surfers Paradise RSL Club, with a Guard
of Honour supplied by Reserve Battery 41.
Navy cadet David Clarke piped Bert aboard. Bert joined the RN in 1918,
and transferred to the RAN in 1925. He completed a number of courses
and served in HMA Ships Australia and Canberra before his period of
engagement expired in April 1938. His time out of naval uniform was
short as he was re-mobilised in September 1939, and drafted to HMAS
Canberra. He survived her sinking in August 1942. Two other Canberra
survivors were among those who helped him celebrate his birthday.
Bert is an active member of the Gold Coast Division of the HMAS Canberra
HMAS
Shropshire Association.
