THE bulk of the ADF personnel in East Timor are Army but there are one or two from the Navy along to keep an eye on things.

LS Philip ‘Flash’ Gordon is an avionics technician serving with 5 Avn Regt to support the 5/7RAR Battalion Group in Sector West along the border with West Timor. LS Gordon said before coming to East Timor he had been serving in Townsville in one of three exchange positions the Navy holds there.

“We do a swap and the Army sends soldiers to serve at 816 Squadron,” he said.

“Working with the Army is brilliant – it’s a different environment and I really enjoy that.” The different operating environments in which Army and Navy commonly work mean aircraft maintenance can have emphasis on different areas.

This is LS Gordon’s third deployment to East Timor, having been here during INTERFET and again late last year.
