An officer who led a team of RAN divers in helping HMS Nottingham in the first perilous hours after she was torn open on Wolfe Rock, Lord Howe Island last July, has had his work formally acknowledged.

LEUT Damien Scully (RAN) from AUSCDTONE, received the Maritime Commander’s Comm-endation at ceremonial Divisions held at Fleet Base East.

MC, RADM Raydon Gates personally presented the award before 1100 other officers and sailors.

Called from his home late at night LEUT Scully and his team gathered equipment and within hours were at RAAF Richmond and on their way to the island.

Using their salvage skills they were able to minimise further flooding of the warship by attaching plates, shoring and other sealing material.

Later LEUT Scully and his divers were involved in cutting away jagged metal.

The commendation to LEUT Scully was one of a number of awards presented.

Royal Canadian Navy officer, LCDR Daniel Agnew, received a MC Commendation as the Officer in Charge of the RAN’s Tactical Development and Analysis Group attached to MHQ.

POMTS Derek Excell received an MC commendation for extraordinary dedication to duties at FIMA/Waterhen.
LSMT Adam Carter received a similar award for dedication to duty in HMAS Fremantle while the same award went to LSBM Antony Kirk for professionalism and devotion to duty in Manoora.

The Australia Day Medallion and Certificate went to POCIS Mervin Beergah for his work as the manager of Waterhen’s communications centre.

Certificates of Appreciation for long and loyal service went to WO Robert Bourke and PO Dean Fuller.

The Defence Long Service Medal was presented to LCDR Richard Francis of the AMPHIBFEG for 25 years service.
