RANSA
on the mark for sailors
Situated
on one of the most exclusive pieces of real estate, Rushcutters
Bay, on the site of the old HMAS Rushcutter, is one of Sydneys
best-kept secrets, the Royal Australian Naval Sailing Association.
Originally formed in 1947 by CDRE Leo Shultz to promote sailing
in the Navy, RANSA now has members from all branches of the ADF
as well as local civilians.
The club has a membership of around 500 and is open to all serving
and retired Defence personnel, while non-Service personnel are always
most welcome.
In winter months, races are conducted on Wednesday and Saturday
afternoon, and in summer there is a Friday twilight series starting
at 6pm.
Boats from RANSA and other clubs compete in these races and cover
a broad spectrum, from 22-foot keel boats through to the impressive
Sydney-Hobart racing yachts.
The Friday evening races are not too serious and very popular as
a great way to begin a weekend, as many people come down to the
club straight from work, have a fun sail and then back to the clubhouse
for a few drinks and a barbeque on the terrace overlooking the harbour.
If you find yourself in Sydney with a free Wednesday afternoon or
a Friday evening in summer, why not visit the club in Rushcutters
Bay, and you will be assured of a very warm and friendly welcome.
If you are an expert sailor or you cant tell a reef knot from
a mainbrace, just turn up and you can be sure of being welcomed
on one of the club boats for a sail.
RANSA also runs regular competent crew courses for those
who wish to take their sailing a step further.
Past and present Navy personnel are also always welcome. For further
information, phone 02-9363 9939 or visit the website www.ransa.com.au.
