Australia-China ties were strengthened recently when the Maritime Commander and HMAS Sydney paid a visit to our northern neighbours.

With the aim of fostering international relationships, MC RADM Raydon Gates coincided a trip to China with Sydney’s visit to Qingdao.

His stay included meetings with senior PLA-N officers and a number of official functions.

The meetings were conducted through interpreters, who no doubt struggled to interpret our ‘Navy-speak’ into Chinese.

It wasn’t all formal meetings and functions for the Admiral however, who managed to fit in some sightseeing to various local attractions, including a tour of a major white goods factory.

As well as meeting new people, RADM Gates learnt some ancient Chinese traditions, forged many new relationships, and even apparently developed a penchant for green tea.
