readies for big sing after open day
Big
crowd expected at carols
More
than 5,000 people are expected to attend HMAS Watson on Sunday December
8 for an action packed open day and a follow-on Carols
by Candlelight.
Led by CAPT Peter Murray, the ships company is combining with
the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Woollahra Council to
stage the events.
The emergency services have thrown their support behind the activity.
Dubbed the South Head Open Day and Carols by Candlelight, the gates
will open at 1pm.
Sailors will display some of the most modern training tools in the
world including the bridge simulator. The Navy divers will also
be in action
Visitors can become a captain and take charge of the
bridge simulator or watch a war being fought on an operations room
simulator.
They can learn about the community from representatives of Woollahra
Council.
NSW police, the Fire Brigade and the State Emergency Service will
also have displays.
At 1.30pm the Westpac Rescue Helicopter will do a winching demonstration.
Guides from the National Parks and Wildlife Service will conduct
tours of the historic fortifications which dot Watson and South
Head Park.
There will be historic displays centred on the 1871 battlements
and personnel will add realism by dressing as 1800 Royal Marines.
As the sun sets the carols will get underway.
Backdropped by the spectacular lights of Sydney, the RAN Band-Sydney
will be joined by the Vaucluse High School Choir.
Santa Claus will arrive compliments of the NSW Fire Brigades.
Carolers are invited to bring a picnic basket or buy food from stalls.
