Shine a little light on the subject

Reviews by Cpl Mark Eaton

The Dorcy Clip Light.

DORCY CLIP LIGHT

For those small, fiddly jobs where you need to throw some light on the subject, the Dorcy Clip Light may be the answer.

Portable and lightweight with a spring-loaded clip and swivel head which turns in two directions, the Dorcy Clip Light has a multitude of uses.

Reading maps, repairing small items, operating in confined spaces or just reading a book in low light becomes easier due to its small, unobtrusive size.

Although made out of plastic and not as robust in comparison to other models, the Clip Light throws out enough light for its intended purpose.

The product comes with a lifetime warranty and is powered by two supplied double-A batteries.

The light does not include a red filter.

Attempts at locating technical specs for this particular model on the web were disappointing with no results. Check

www.sears.com for information on similar products by the same manufacturer.

The Dorcy Clip Light is available from Big W.

Price: $9.

The Nikon Coolpix 4300.

NIKON COOLPIX 4300

Nikon’s Coolpix 4300 is the latest addition to a growing stable of digital cameras aimed at the amateur photographer market.

Lightweight and small enough to fit in one hand, the Coolpix 4300 includes an 8-24mm zoom lens, large LCD display and built-in auto flash.

The camera also comes with a 16mb flash card to record images and MPEG (movie) capability up to 35 seconds.

Images can be transferred to your computer or TV for viewing via the supplied USB cable.

Before choosing a digital camera, one of the most important factors to consider is the resolution or size of images it can record.

Resolution is measured in pixels, so digital cameras with a resolution of four mega pixels, such as the Coolpix 4300, for example will produce a reasonable A4 size print.

Therefore, a camera with a higher number of pixels will produce better quality enlargements but expect retail price to increase in comparison.

Saving and filing your best shots is simple with the supplied software, FotoStation Easy, compatible with MAC OS, Windows XP and above. The Coolpix comes with a rechargeable battery and charger.

One of the camera’s limitations is the time delay of approximately two seconds when the shutter button is depressed.

Therefore taking photos at the football or motor racing could present a few problems.

Overall, this camera is compact, modern looking and easy to use offering good value for money.

The Nikon Coolpix 4300 is available from Ted’s camera stores and other camera suppliers. For more information, www.teds.com.au or www.max-well.com.au

Cost: $1099.
