Thais home in on Aussie radar

The RAN has helped the Royal Thai Navy to maintain its operational capability by presenting a surplus SPS52 Radar from the decommissioned HMAS Brisbane.

The radar was originally embarked in HMAS Manoora last year for delivery to the Royal Thai Navy but Manoora was redirected at the last minute for operational reasons.

HMAS Success delivered the air search radar to Sattahip Naval Base on September 17.

The radar was handed over by CO Success CMDR John Connor in a ceremony at the base.

The RTN aircraft carrier HTMS Chakri Naruebet is the ship most likely to benefit from the rare spare parts.

Her CO was on hand to thank the RAN for its contribution.

“The spare parts from the SPS radar will allow the RTN to maintain an important operational capability, and is a good example of Australia’s commitment to Defence co-operation in the region” said CMDR Connor.
