Golfers getting set for ADF titles

The ADF Golf Association (ADFGA) committee is now well prepared for the 18th annual ADF National Golf Championships to be held at Federal Golf Club in Canberra from December 9-13.

Nationals Tournament Director, SQNLDR Trevor Owens, said the new format trialled in 2001 had been a great success and was welcomed by the membership from the three Services who had travelled from all around Australia to compete.

“I am especially proud that the ADFGA offers a tournament not equalled anywhere in the corporate world in terms of the low entry fee, the quality of the venue, the prizes offered and the overall atmosphere of what is truly a great amateur event,” SQNLDR Owens said.

The 2002 event takes on more significance for representative team selection as there is a planned overseas tour to New Zealand in 2003.

The 2000 and 2001 ADF champion (LEUT Andrei Ezergailis, HMAS Stirling) is expected to return to try and secure a hat-trick of wins while he would be challenged hard by CMDR Mike Rossendell, the 1995 and 1996 ADF champion, who has returned from an overseas posting and is making a return to the ADF golf scene.

Other likely contenders for the ADF title are SGT Craig Corrigan (Army WA) and WO2 Cliff Smith (Army SYD), and FLTLT Justin Mangan (Bandiana) and LAC John Bell (RAAF Canberra).

FSGT Lainie Thorn (Canberra) is expected to return to defend the title of ADF Ladies Champion, which was contested for the first time in 2001.

The 2002 National Championship information and entry package can be obtained from the ADFGA’s regional representatives. Download copies can be located on the ADFGA website (www.sportscentreoz.com/adfgaindex.htm), or a copy can be requested by emailing adfga@austarmetro.com.au.
