TS Tobruk in running for best Cadet unit
Eighty units vie for award

The Newcastle cadet training ship Tobruk, winners of the Peter Ballesty Trophy for best ANC unit in NSW and the ACT, is under assessment for the best unit in Australia.

Last month the cadets of TS Tobruk went on parade for the National ANC Commander, CAPT Gavin Reeves and the ANC’s Deputy Director, CMDR Allan Vidler.

CAPT Reeves and CMDR Vidler are now visiting cadet units around Australia. Eighty training ships seek the top award.

“We will know the winning unit on November 9 when the Chief of Navy, VADM Chris Ritchie visits that unit,” ANC spokesman LEUT Adam Lysle said.

The ANC movement is a primary source of recruits for the Royal Australian Navy with 30 per cent moving on to the RAN.

Many senior cadets remain with the ANC taking commission and becoming commanding officers.

Speaking of her own unit Tobruk’s commanding officer LEUT Lois McKenny said she was very proud of her ship’s company and its achievements.

“After a lot of hard work, it is brilliant to see their efforts come to fruition,” she said.
“They are a great ship’s company to work with.”

CAPT Reeves said he was humbled by the consistent and tireless efforts of his staff.

“Without all the volunteer staff, particularly the commanding officers, many of the cadet units would not be able to achieve the high standards they do,” he said.
