Contaminated ordnance destroyed

Explosive experts have destroyed seawater-contaminated ordnance removed from the damaged HMS Nottingham.

The ordnance was removed from the warship at an isolated wharf in Newcastle, taken by truck to a safe area at the Singleton Army Complex, northwest of Newcastle and destroyed in a series of controlled detonations.

It is expected that at the end of the month a “sink and lift” ship will reach Newcastle to carry the warship back to the United Kingdom.
