RAN signs health deal with RNSH

December 24, 2001

The Royal Australian Navy has entered into a formal agreement with Sydney's Royal north Shore Hospital which will see Navy doctors, nurses and medics honing their skills at the hospital.

A doctor, nurse and medic have already taken part in a trial of the program.

The scheme means RAN personnel will attend RNSH and work in casualty, intensive care, general surgery, obstetrics and paediatrics.

The Navy doctors and nurses will work with their peers while senior nursing sisters will be the supervisors for the medics.

Staff from RNSH will work at the Balmoral Naval Hospital.

The agreement between the Balmoral Naval Hospital, representing the RAN and Royal North Shore Hospital was formally signed on the bridge of HMAS Manoora on Tuesday, November 13.

Medical officer in charge of BNH, CMDR Mark Parrish signed on behalf of the Navy while Dr Stephen Christley, the chief executive officer of the Northern Sydney Area Health Service and Miss Joanne Fisher, the executive director of RNSH, signed on behalf of the civil hospital.

CMDR Parrish said the scheme will see the RAN personnel fully integrated into civilian medical teams.

"Naval personnel will work in areas which are relevant to military and peacekeeping operations such as emergency medicine, intensive care, general surgery, obstetrics and paediatrics.

"The experience our staff gain while on rotation at Royal North Shore Hospital will ensure they remain up-to-speed with these specialist medical areas so they can provide the best possible care when deployed in their military capacity."
