Landlocked sub looking good

July 9, 2001

HMAS OTWAY, the Oberon Class submarine which now sits in a park at Holbrook in country NSW is now looking 'top class'.

Thanks to a group of Sydney sailors she has undergone a 'scrub down and pretty coat'.

In May of this year CMDR Ted Wynberg (CO HMAS PENGUIN) received a letter from Holbrook Shire Council requesting assistance to refurbish the memorial in preparation for the submariner's reunion in June.

CMDR Wynberg selected LCDR Adrian Rogers (HMAS PENGUIN) to form a team to assist the Holbrook community in the repainting of the submarine.

LCDR Rogers and CPOB Paul Borgas (FIMA Sydney Corrosion Control Section) travelled to Holbrook on May 16 to inspect the site and the task at hand.

A crew of seven volunteers with high pressure water blasters and 170 litres of paint gave the submarine a well-needed facelift.

The team of volunteers, none of whom are submariners, and drawn from HMAS PENGUIN and FIMA Sydney Corrosion Control Section started work on Monday June 4.

They completed the mammoth task on Thursday June 7.

The team headed up by LCDR Adrian Rogers and CPOB Paul Borgas and consisted of LSBM Phil Walker, ABBM Janelle Fletcher, ABBM Scott Pretious, ABBM Chris Holloway and SMNBM Scott Anderson was well received by the local community of Holbrook.

With the local people donating the use of their own cherry pickers the work was completed.

The OTWAY was high-pressure water and garnet-blasted, scraped back and given two full coats of paint donated by the Submariners Association of Holbrook.

Local media took a significant interest in the project with stories being gazetted by Albury and Holbrook newspapers as well LCDR Rogers being interviewed by WIN and Prime News.

The interview was aired in the local area.

The Mayor of Holbrook Cr Heather Wilton expressed Holbrook's gratitude to LCDR Rogers and CPO Borgas during a semi formal dinner with her and her husband on Wednesday evening.
