Global Hawk plan to take off

July 9, 2001

Australia has outlined plans to purchase Global Hawk to help patrol our extended air and sea approaches.

Defence will seek information on the price and availability of Global Hawk with a view to seeking final approval for purchase in the year 2004/05, with delivery of the first aircraft scheduled for 2007.

The capability was also outlined in the Defence White Paper, stating, "Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles are emerging concepts that offer Australia a great deal of potential for surveillance, reconnaissance, information gathering and eventually the delivery of combat power".
