Women's footy
FOLLOWING the inaugural women's Australian football match at the Australian
Services Australian Football Association (ASAFA) national carnival in Brisbane
in October, the ASAFA is now looking for females to participate in future
competitions.
The ASAFA is currently compiling a data base of all ADF female footballers
and those with a desire to play, coach or umpire the game. Future activities
include the Arafura Games from May 9-26, 01 and the national carnival in
October 01.
Each service requires player and support staff and all expressions of interest
should be directed to WO2 Kim Beasland on 02-9635 7822 (w), 9869 7816 (h),
or 0410-483160 (mob).
Touch rugby USA
AN ad-hoc ADF touch rugby team made up of exchange personnel based in San
Diego entered the annual Southern Californian touch tournament recently.
The tournament, held at Ocean Beach, comprised 12 mixed teams from around
California. Although our team had only three opportunities to practice together
prior to the day, the results were pleasing with the Australian team finishing
fifth.
Taking a dive
THE HMAS STIRLING Dive Club has not been active for some time, but to keep
it afloat, equipment is still available for daily or weekly rental. Anyone
interested in learning to dive, Try Dives will be conducted on Thursdays
from 1200-1230 in the pool.
All you need are swimmers and a towel and if you like it, go from there.
Further info from CPOCD Stephen Bell on extension 2498, or email.
Charitable triathletes
Four members of the Defence Force Recruiting Centre in Townsville recently
completed a three-day charity bike ride from Townsville to Charters Towers
and return, a total distance of 350km.
As a pre-entry condition, each person was required to raise $200 from the
local community, which saw members mix with both the Defence and civilian
community and raise awareness of children suffering from cancer. The team
raised $980, which was donated to the Children's Cancer Institute of Australia
appeal.
Defence members taking part in the ride were: CPOB Chris Bryant (RAN), CPL
Sue Montgomery (RAAF), SIG Selena Vinson (Army) and PTE Lisa Van Dyke (Army).
$7000 for SIDS
A TEAM of Defence Force runners and cyclists raised $7000 for the Sudden
Infant Death Syndrome Foundation following a marathon trek from Perth to
HMAS STIRLING in 30-degree heat at the end of October.
The athletes overtook last year's total of $5300 following a good response
from Defence personnel and members of the public. More than 30 runners and
cyclists took part in the event, which provided a major boost to the SIDS
coffers.
