HMAS PENGUIN's 22nd annual Gate to Gate swung open with a bang this month when Olympic yachting gold medallist Belinda Stowell fired the starting pistol.

"I was pleased to welcome the Australian Olympic yachting team back to PENGUIN," said the XO LCDR Michael Hickey.

"Our association with them has extended over three years during their training and selection trials here at PENGUIN. It has been an excellent way in which the RAN has directly supported our Olympians."

The five-kilometre scenic undulating course overlooking picturesque Balmoral Beach and Chowder Bay on Sydney Harbour attracted more than 130 defence and visiting competitors.

The run however was not for the Sunday stroller with the long haul of steep steps leading from Chowder Bay to Georges Heights sorting out the field. There was some gruelling jostling for positions and last minute challenges.

ABMED Danika Greenhalf was the first female runner home from PENGUIN who also won the open event in a time of 22:18. CPL Simon O'Regan from 1 Health Support Btn at Holsworthy won the open male event and was the overall winner for the day (15:46).

The first female veteran was SNR CON Carolyn Braybrook of Nth Sydney Police with SGT Matvelok the winning male (18:11). MAJ Bob Richards from HQ Tng Cmd Aust, was the first walker home.

A barbecue was held on completion which provided social interaction between the three services, Defence civilians, police and visitors.
