Hand message room no more

December 11, 2000

Technology has caught up with the NAVCALS Sydney Hand Message Room heralding a job change for long-time encumbent Mr Gus Consadine.

Gus, a familiar face to everyone doing signal runs, held this job since paying off as a LSSIG in the RAN in 1983.

He originally worked in the former COMAUSFLT Commcen situated in the sub-basement of HMAS Kuttabul before moving to the current HMR when the Maritime Headquarters building opened in 1990.

The closure of the HMR has been prompted by the rollout of the CMS desktop messaging system and ships using data transfer methods to receive signals. Ironically Gus will be employed manning the data transfer bays that have made his job redundant.
