May 29, 2000

Defence Minister, Mr John Moore, has announced additional funding of $41 million for further upgrading of Naval Air Station, HMAS ALBATROSS, at Nowra.

"The news is very popular with the local population," the Commanding Officer of the base, CAPT John Wood, said.

Mr Moore said: " This project gives the green light to the second stage of redevelopment work already underway at HMAS ALBATROSS. It has the potential to create an additional 100 jobs in the local area over the next 18 months."

The most recent approval covers facilities and services to upgrade:

  • existing arrester gear for fixed-wing aircraft using the main runway;

  • helicopter corrosion control and aircraft wash facilities;

  • flight deck procedural training simulators;

  • additional hard-stand for visiting military aircraft;

  • helicopter underwater escape training simulator;

  • gymnasium;

  • taxiway extension;

  • helicopter ordnance loading apron;

  • perimeter fencing and engineering services.

    The works continue the redevelopment of the base. Stage one represented a $69 million investment.
