Wollongong's warm summer weather was matched only by its warm welcome when
HMAS ARUNTA visited Port Kembla in NSW.
The visit was the ship's last before homeporting to HMAS STIRLING. It was
also a chance to welcome CMDR Stephen Gilmore who has succeeded CAPT Greg
Yorke as Commanding Officer.
More than 3000 people visited the ship, dubbed by the Illawarra Mercury
as "the heart of Port Kembla" during two public open days.
Before entering Port Kembla ARUNTA embarked Illawarra media for an action
packed morning featuring ship tours, attacks by Royal New Zealand Air Force
A4 Skyhawks, damage control exercises and deck landing by Seahawk and Squirrel
helicopters.
The two winners of a sea-ride prize offered in a local radio promotion also
enjoyed the action.
After entering Port Kembla Harbour a contingent from the ship's company
visited nearby Figtree High School, accompanied by a Squirrel helicopter
from 723 Squadron (CMDR Steve Elms).
Former Figtree High School student SBLT Michael Kirby, from 816 Squadron,
spoke to the students about his experiences in the RAN and his efforts to
become a naval aviator.
Figtree High School Careers Advisor, Bill McQueen said the visit was well
received by all students and very helpful for those who had indicated an
interest in joining the Australian Defence Force.
