RAN's E.T. Awards
The Queen has presented a Commendation for Gallantry to a RAN diver who swam to an East Timor beach to reconnoitre the area for a subsequent INTERFET landing.
Cyclone ignites speedy reaction
Staff attached to the Harold E. Holt Communications Base in Western Australia has gone to the aid of Defence families, tourists and oil rig workers threatened and stranded by Cyclone Steve.
Team effort for Games anthems
After eight months of hard work the Australian Defence Force is entering into the final phase of recording the national anthems of the participating countries in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Collins submarine upgrade on track

Bouncing boy for GAWLER
In what is believed a "first" a baby has been born aboard a RAN patrol boat. Within seconds of the little boy's entry to the world two sailors were looking after him.
Four launched two remaining
The fourth of the RAN's six minehunters, GASCOYNE, has been launched in Newcastle. More than 600 people watched Ms Victoria Peel, daughter of CAPT John Peel who commanded the first HMAS GASCOYNE in WWII, launch the 720 tonne vessel.
Systems Command looks to the future
The first Commander Australian Navy Systems Command, CDRE Merv Davis, is confident the Chief of Navy's new Force Element Group (FEG) based management approach will give better results because of its focus on the delivery of capability.
Patrol boat recognition
As part of the RAN restructuring a new senior naval position has been created at Darwin Naval Base to command the newly-formed Patrol Boat Group. RAN patrol boats now form one of seven new FEGs whose aim is to align authority, accountability and responsibility.

The growl of the rotors of RAN Seahawk helicopter Tiger 85 are believed to have woken a sleeping swimmer reported missing at Gerroa beach near Nowra in NSW.
Navy role in East Timor continues
Naval personnel continue to provide essential support to the ADF in East Timor after the transition from INTERFET to UNTAET (United Nations Transitional Administration East Timor) on February 23 (T-day).
Close shave for RUSHCUTTER

Lessons on board
It was a case of "lessons on deck" for a group of Fijian school students. When HMAS GEELONG visited Levuka in Fiji the Commanding Officer LCDR Bob Plath discovered the children from the Levuka Primary School he had invited on board, were doing study on compasses, maps and nautical charts.
ANZAC's mission of Mersey
HMAS ANZAC (CAPT Matt Tripovich) took part in a famous Tasmanian tradition over the weekend of March 4/7 when she took part in the annual Devonport Apex Regatta.
ARUNTA turns one
HMAS ARUNTA (CMDR Greg Yorke) is one- year-old. She turned one on December 12 at Williamstown, Melbourne. ARUNTA is the third ANZAC to be built at Tenix Dockyard, and the second ANZAC to be commissioned into the RAN.
Future leaders parade for CDF
The year 2000 CDF parade at the Australian Defence Force Academy was a big day for CMDR Jenny Graham, as well as for the nearly 200 first year officer cadets and midshipmen who were participating in their first parade as fully fledged members of the Australian Defence Forces.
High school at sea
Sixteen Year 12 marine science students and two teachers from Thursday Island High School joined HMAS BENALLA (LCDR A.Withers) and her ship's for a one day field trip as part of their marine science studies program.
