Continued East
Timor presence
The RAN will continue to provide an important naval presence in East
Timor even though the service's Operation Stabilise responsibilities
have ended, CDRE Brian Robertson said. "We are keeping two LCHs in
East Timor," CDRE Robertson said on his return home on February 24.

Navy looks
to future
The RAN is to produce a public information booklet telling why Australia
has a navy and how that service contributes to the nation's security.
CAPT James Goldrick from the Seapower Centre is writing the Navy doctrine
document planned for publishing next month. |

MC sets out
on a discovery course
The Tomorrow's Navy project will bring about significant changes to
the Maritime Command structure and in what the command does. To co-ordinate
these changes the MC, RADM J.R. Lord, has established Project Discovery.

Diver: thanks
for giving back legs
A civilian diver, paralysed from the waist down by the bends, credits
the RAN with "giving him back his legs" and the ability to again walk.
"The treatment and support given to me by the doctors, medics, nurses
and divers at HMAS PENGUIN, along with their hyperbaric chambers,
was terrific, overwhelming…" Mr Peter Richards said. |

Saw your light was on so decided to drop in. This might well appear
to be the situation as LEUT Anson Needham pulls his RAN HS748 aircraft
710 away from sister 709 flown by SBLT Jarrod Phillips and heads for
the Point Perpendicular lighthouse. |

too
When the RAN retires its pair of HS748 aircraft in June LCDR Tony
Haigh will go with them. LCDR Haigh, 46, is the flight commander of
723 Squadron's 748 flight. |

After an enjoyable Christmas and New Year leave period, MELBOURNE
sailed from Fleet Base East on Monday 10 January, bound for Darwin
and then operational duties off East Timor in support of INTERFET,
as part of the RAN's Operation WARDEN. |

Timor last month after thanking the multi-national participants of
INTERFET for their efforts in assisting to bring peace and stability

The RAN's patrol boats' primary task across northern Australia is
to protect the nation's fish stocks and intercept vessels bringing
illegal immigrants to our shores. Presently there are six patrol boats
home ported in Darwin. |

Three of the RAN's smaller ships, the minesweepers BANDICOOT, WALLAROO
and BROLGA have done great work and "flown the flag" for Australia
in Operation Bel Isi in recent months. |

Divers work
on wreck
Clearance divers and ordnance specialists from AUSCDTs One and Four
have completed another vital task in East Timor. They attended Betano
to dive on the wreck of VOYAGER 1, the WW11 warship grounded during
the Far East campaign of the war. |

Submarine divisions
CAPT Richard Shalders has conducted ceremonial divisions at the submarine
headquarters based at HMAS STIRLING. The divisions saw a well turned
out group of officers and sailors, not only from the base but from
submarines FARNCOMB, COLLINS and WALLER. |

present the CO, CMDR Greg Yorke and the Ship's company with a number

Biathlon a
record
A record number of competitors tackled the annual HMAS WATSON biathlon
late last year. A hot but very windy day made life difficult for competitors
down at the beach in the swim leg, but the stiff wind was a welcome
relief to some in the run leg. |

Records fall
in fun run
The Sydney Navy fun run attracted a good field of 110 competitors
this year, including 20 strong team from the Royal Australian Navy
Band. Now in its eight year, the run is organised by the Navy Indoor
Sports Centre at HMAS KUTTABUL. |

The National State Teams Half Marathon Championships will be held
in conjunction with the Canberra Half Marathon on Sunday April 9.
