Patrol Boats Keep Tabs On Fishing Fleet
Royal Australian Navy patrol boats have found a large foreign fishing fleet of 40 trawlers, three mother ships and a tanker, operating just outside Australian waters north of Australia.
Defence Minister visits WESTRALIA
The Minister for Defence, Mr John Moore, has visited HMAS WESTRALIA. Accompanied by the Chief of Navy and Commodore Fleet Bases, the Minister used the time to acquaint himself with WESTRALIA and the current issues facing the ship.

The crew of patrol boat HMAS GERALDTON ( LCDR P Orchard) found hookah diving gear ( compressor, air line and regulator) when they arrested and searched an Indonesian Type 2 fishing boat found fishing illegally in Australian waters.

The Ships' Company of the RAN's latest warship, HMAS ARUNTA (CMDR Greg Yorke), has exercised the RAN's right of Freedom of Entry into the City of Hobson's Bay (Williamstown). ARUNTA has completed her final sea trials and was commissioned RAN on December 12.
 
Howler for ADF League
Howling winds and Sydney's freezing conditions were not enough to slow players in the ADF's emerging team sport. Rugby league players form around the country converged at Randwick in Sydney to compete for the national championship and vie selection in the ADF side.

Report On Disaster Soon To Be Public
The report into the fire aboard HMAS WESTRALIA, in which four people died, contains 100 recommendations, the Federal Finance Minister, Mr John Fahey said. He said it was hoped details of the report would be released publicly in the "very near future".

Two of the RAN's hardest worked sail training yachts have been entered in the Sydney to Hobart yacht classic. The ALEXANDER of CRESWELL will be skippered by Warren Hellwig and crewed by volunteers from HMAS HARMAN.

An FBI pistol training course is now the basis for training and competition for Royal Australian Navy marksmen. Among the tests now faced by RAN personnel are the ability to shoot with both hands, change magazines quickly, to fire from behind barricades and cope with varying distances.
