The Netball Champs Of Two Oceans

August 10, 1998

Navy has dominated the interservice netball competitions on both sides of Australia.

In Western Australia, the Navy's mixed team had mixed results, defeating the Army 40 - 26, but going down by just four points to the RAAF 27 - 31. The RAAF mixed side defeated Army 33 - 26.

But the Navy women's team clinched the winner's trophy in the competition at HMAS STIRLING by trouncing the Army girls by a massive 81 - 24.

In this month's NSW competition, held at Sydney's Navy Indoor Sports Centre, Garden Island, despite being hosted by the RAAF, both Navy teams looked stronger than last year's sides despite having limited time to prepare.

The top women's game was between the Navy and last year's winner, Army, with the sailors completely dominating play to take out the match 44 - 29.

Throughout the series the Navy's women were never threatened, easily winning all four of their games. However, the mixed teams were more closely matched and as play progressed it became clear that it would be a neck-and-neck race for the title.

Going into the final game, the point score between Army and Navy was so close that the match became a grand final, the title to go to the winner. Army took the lead early in the match, but the Navy kept pegging away and looked the stronger side as the end drew near.

Late in the second half Navy surged away to win by a still close 40 - 35. Most valuable player from the mixed tournament was ABATA Ricky Dorey, with LSET Jenny Veale the female most valuable player. The Combined Services National Carnival will be played from October 2 to October 4 at Albury-Wodonga.
