Kelly the first three-time Navy top shot

June 29, 1998

The five best shots in the RAN have been decided at the Navy's 1998 Champion Shot competition.

LCDR Peter Kelly won the Mick Worthham trophy for shooting the highest aggregate score on day two of the competition and later the Warrant Officer of the Navy, WO Dave McConnell, pinned the Champion Shot medal on LCDR Kelly, who became the first person to win the medal three times. CPONPC Bill Sheather won both the Perry trophy for shooting the highest Navy score in the 1998 Champion Shot eliminations and the perpetual St Barbara trophy, donated by WOB Bob Harvey, for achieving the best aggregate score for day one.

The number two badge was won by POB M.E. Blake of HMAS BRISBANE, while LSBM B. Balckburn-Candlin of HMAS CERBERUS claimed the

number three badge. HMAS WESTRALIA's WO D.T. Baker claimed the number four badge and a proud Taffy Jordan from HMAS CAIRNS became the fifth best shot in the Navy this year.
In last month's cadet target rifle championships, PO T. Thomas from TS VAMPIRE boasted a dual win when he took home the final badge of the day and although competing with the Army and Air Training Corps, who dominated the prize lists, managed to score the top Navy prize.

Earlier it was a case of several shots in the dark for the Navy's target rifle team on the first day of competition in the Australian Army Skill at Arms meeting at Brisbane's Belmont shooting complex last month as the match drew to a close.

In the absence of his usual partner, WOB Bob Harvey from HMAS WATERHEN had to coach himself during the 300 yard snap match, showing great fortitude and skill to hit the target nine times out of 10 in trying conditions.

The competition consisted of two sighters and 10 deliberate shots at 1000, 900, and 800 yards, plus a rapid at 600 yards and a snap at 300.

Delays due to "heavy dew" in Brisbane ... the rain had flooded the range for two days ... meant the final shooters were competing after sunset, while competitors from the pistol matches were discussing the state of world affairs in the wet canteen.

The RAAF's SGT Brett Hartman said it was the first time he had seen muzzle flash from a target rifle!

Out of a possible 1250 points, the team scores were: 1st Army Gold, 1192.65; 2nd Army Yellow, 1187.48; 3rd RAAF, 1158.56; 4th Navy, 1073.33.

Scores for the RAN team, listed in shooting order, were: PO Edwards, 206.6; CPO Muir, 214.8; PO Blake, 226.5; AB Friend, 209.5; WO Harvey, 218.9.
