Navy rugby back on top in NSW
June 29, 1998
The Navy's football resurgence has paid off in NSW, with the sailors
dominating this year's interservice rugby union championships.
The RANRU side faced the Army in the final at BASC, Randwick, under
sunny skies and the hostile eyes of a large crowd of Army supporters.
It looked bad just five minutes after the kick-off when Army scored
out wide, but the conversion attempt was offline.
Navy dominated most of the first half from that point however and
just before half-time five-eighth ABET Alex Newman put a high kick
into the Army's 22 area.
The Army fullback fumbled and dropped the ball and tried to regather
to pass to a teammate, but the Navy's backs rushed through with
ABCK Stacey Howard of HMAS BRISBANE intercepting the pass to score
Navy's first five pointer.
ABMUSN Ricky Dummigan narrowly missed the conversion.
The remainder of the first half was played in the Army's territory,
with the score at the break five-all.
After both coaches emphasised the importance of the game and urged
their sides to get on top early in the second half, Navy pressured
the Army from the restart.
Early in the second session tight forward work form a lineout 15
metres into Army territory allowed Navy to maul the ball 20 metres
forward.
Then it was spun out wide where the inside centre ABMS Ryan Osborne
of HMAS PENGUIN scored in the corner. Again the conversion attempt
failed, but the Navy held the Army out for the rest of the match
for a 10-5 victory.
In a team of good players, the Navy's most valuable player award
went to flanker LSPT Brian Garrety.
