Brumbies form alliance with HMAS Canberra
February 04, 2001
The ACT Brumbies
rugby union team held a unique presentation at training session recently
when it handed a complete set of jerseys to the CO of HMAS Canberra, CMDR
Roger Boyce.
Wallaby and ACT Brumbies captain,
George Gregan made the presentation to CMDR Boyce, who was extremely complimentary
of the relationship between the ship and the team.
"It's great because we're
HMAS Canberra and the Brumbies are a Canberra team," he said.
"When the ship's team
wear the jerseys it definitely gives them a psychological edge to be associated
with such a successful and popular organisation," he said.
George Gregan was also presented
with caps from the ship in appreciation for the jerseys and was quick
to acknowledge their continued support.
"We know the ship's company
on HMAS Canberra get a real buzz out of wearing the Brumbies jerseys as
we do. We're looking forward to catching up with them soon and having
a look around the ship," he said.
The ship's rugby team has proudly
worn the Brumbies jerseys both nationally and internationally with great
success.
With the Brumbies having secured
last season's Super 12 premiership, Canberra's ship's company is kept
constantly up to date with Brumbies information via e-mail and video tapes
of the games.
HMAS Canberra will be on overseas
duty for the next six months, however they intend to find time to barrack
for their team when the Brumbies take on the Queensland Reds in the first
game of the year on February 23 at Bruce Stadium.
