1900 — Tpr John Bisbee and Lt Guy Wylly, both 1 Tasmanian Imperial Bushmen, awarded VCs for their actions at Warin Bad, South Africa.
1912 — #13 Fd Sqn.
1918 — Pte William Currey, 53 Bn, awarded the VC for his actions near Peronne, France. Sgt Albert Lowerson, 21 Bn; Lt Edgar Towner, 2 MG Bn; and Pte Robert Mactier, 23 Bn (posthumously); awarded the VC for their actions at Mont St Quentin.
1942 — Japanese advance along the Owen Stanley Ranges, New Guinea.
1965 — #18 Den Unit.
1988 — #13 Fd Sup Coy.

September 2
1918 — Cpl Maurice Buckley, 13 Bn (posthumously); Cpl Arthur Hall, 54 Bn; and Cpl Lawrence Weathers, 43 Bn; awarded VCs for their actions near Peronne, France.
1945 — Liberation of Singapore and release of POWs followed by Japanese surrender to Allied forces.

September 3
1915 —Lt William Dartnell, Royal Fusiliers, awarded the VC for his actions near Maktau, British East Africa (now Kenya).
1939 — Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand declare war on Germany.
1943 — Allies invade Italy.

September 4
1939 — Militia mobilised after Governor-General Lord Gowrie proclaims “existence of war”.
1942 — Cpl John Alexander, 2/9 Bn, awarded the VC for his actions during the Japanese evacuation of Milne Bay.
1943 — 20 Bde lands 18 miles east of Lae, New Guinea. It is the first large-scale, seaborne invasion by Australian troops since the landing at Gallipoli.
1964 — #SASR, 1 MP Coy.

September 5
1938 — US announces it will be neutral in the event of war in Europe.
1943 — US and Australian paratrooperss drop near and capture Nadzab, New Guinea.

September 7
1951 — 3RAR seizes bridgehead across Imjin River, Korea.

September 11
1914 — Battle of Bitapaka — first Australian conflict of WW1.

September 14
1943 — 26 Bde crosses the Busu river heading towards Lae, New Guinea.

September 15
1943 — 2/25 Bn patrols enter and raise Australian flag at Lae.

September 19
1918 — Australian cavalry units ride around Turkish positions at Nablus, Jordan, sealing enemy escape routes.
1943 — Australians take Kaiapit, New Guinea, from Japanese.

September 20
1917 — 2Lt Fredrick Birks, 6 Bn, awarded the VC (posthumously) for his actions during the attack on Menin Road, France.
1949 — #17 Const Sqn.

September 21
1914 — #RAAPC
1917 — No.2 Sqn AFC reaches France.

September 22
1917 — Pte Reginald Inwood, 10 Bn, awarded the VC for his actions at Polygon Wood, East of Ypres, Belgium.
1943 — 9 Div lands at Scarlet Beach, New Guinea, to begin the assault on Finschhafen.

September 23
1942 — Gen Thomas Blamey appointed C-in-C of Allied Land Forces in New Guinea.

September 24
1914 — Australians occupy Madang, New Guinea.
September 25
1917 — Diggers in the attack on Polygon Wood, France.
1918 — Anzac Mounted Division captures Amman, Jordan.
1942 — Australians’ counter-offensive on the Kokoda Track, New Guinea. HMAS Voyager grounded and destroyed at Batamo Bay, Timor.

September 26
1917 — Sgt John Dwyer, 4 MG Coy, awarded the VC for his actions during the third Battle of Ypres, Belgium.
1943 — Japanese counter-attack on Finschhafen, New Guinea.
1987 — #4/3RNSWR.

September 27
1918 — Hindenburg Line broken at Cambrai, France.
1942 — Japanese withdrawal begins over the Owen Stanley Ranges, New Guinea.
1950 — 3RAR arrives in Pusan, Korea, to join 27 British Commonwealth Bde.

September 28
1917 — Pte Patrick Bugden, 31 Bn, awarded the VC (posthumously) for his actions at Polygon Wood.
1918 — Battle of Flanders Ridge, France, begins.
1919 — British Archangel Expedition, with Australian volunteers, withdraws from North Russia.
1942 — Australians recapture Ioribaiwa village and Eorbaiwa Ridge, New Guinea.
1950 — 5RAR arrives in Korea. 3RAR arrives in Pusan joining 27 British Commonwealth Bde.

September 29
1918 — Maj Blair Wark, 32 Bn, awarded the VC for his actions from Bellicourt to Joncourt. Battle of St Quentin Canal, France, begins.

September 30
1918 — Pte John Ryan, 55 Bn, awarded the VC for his actions against Hindenburg defences. Light Horse cuts Turkish escape from Barada Gorge.
