1901 — Australian Army formally promulgated.
1916 — #49RQR.
1942 — HMAS Perth and USS Houston engage a large Japanese force in the Battle of the Sundra Strait. Both ships are sunk. Perth loses 357 sailors and a further 320 become prisoners, 106 of whom die in captivity.

1943 — Battle of Bismarck Sea begins.
1972 — Last RAAF flight out of Vietnam.

1885 — Sudan contingent departs Sydney.
1942 — Japanese conduct air raids on Broome and Wyndham, Western Australia.

March 4
1804 — 200 convicts escape from Castle Hill, NSW, planning to march to Sydney Cove, capture ships and sail for freedom.
1804 — 56 volunteers march from Sydney to Paramatta in three hours to crush the rebellion.
1942 — HMAS Yarra sinks south of Java.

March 5
1942 — Allied fleet destroys Japanese convoy in Bismarck Sea.
1945 — Australians capture Saposa, Solomon Islands, from Japanese invasion force.

March 6
1941 — Elements of 2AIF embark from Alexanfria, Egypt, for Greece.

March 7
1942 — Japanese forces occupy Java and land at Lae and Salamaua, New Guinea.
1951 — 3RAR suffer heavy losses during Operation Woodbine in Korea.
1965 — 3RAR deploys to Borneo on Operation Sarawak.

March 8
1942 — Allies surrender in Java. Lae and Salamaua fall to the Japanese.
1968 — 2 and 3RAR begin Operation Pinnaroo in the Long Hai Hills, South Vietnam.

March 9
1942 — First Australian troops return from the Middle East.
1945 — Australian and Japanese involved in the Battle of Anumbo River, New Guinea.

March 10
1942 — Japanese invasion forces land at Finschhafen, New Guinea.

March 11
1845 — First Maori War begins.
1951 — #PIR. Australians capture Chusan, Korea.

March 12
1900 — Australian Forces arrive in Blomfontein, South Africa.
1943 — #AACC.
1951 — C Coy 3RAR captures Hill 703, Korea.

March 14
1951 — UN forces re-occupy Seoul, Korea.

1943 — Flt-Lt William Newton, RAAF No.
1943 — 22 Sqn, awarded the VC posthumously for his actions at, Salamaua Isthmus, New Guinea.

1942 — Gen Douglas MacArthur arrives in Australia to assume command of the South West Pacific Area.
1953 — 2RAR replaces 1RAR in Korea.

1941 — 16 Bde arrives in Greece.
1943 — Japanese Admiral Yamamoto dies as his plane crashes after being shot down near Bougainville.
1945 — The last Japanese stronghold, Bacon Hill, New Britain, is captured by Australians.

1916 — Anzac Corps lands in France.
1917 — Lt Frank McNamara, 1 Sqn AFC, receives the only VC awarded to an Australian airman in WWl for actions in Palestine.
1945 — Australian troops land at Soroken Peninsula, Solomon Islands.

1918 — German offensive begins on the Somme, France.
1941 — 6 Cav Regt and 2/9 Bn capture Giarabub, Libya.
1953 — 2RAR relieves 1RAR at Camp Casey, Korea.

March 22
1945 — Cpl Reginald Rattey, 25 Bn, is awarded the VC for his actions near Tokinotu on Bougainville.
1945 — Australians capture Dagua Airstrip, New Guinea, from Japanese. RAAF No, 464 bombs Gestapo headquarters in Denmark.

March 23
1945 — Diggers capture Waitavalo and Tol plantations on New Britain, ending Japanese resistance on the island.

March 24
1901 — Australians capture Boer convoy and guns at Veldfontein, South Africa.
1941 — Australians and British troops begin to withdraw from El Agheila, north Africa.
1942 — Japanese air fleet bombs Port Moresby, Papua.

March 25
1917 — 7 Bde captures Lagincourt from German forces.
1945 — Lt Albert Chowne, 2/2 Bn, awarded the VC posthumously for his actions at Dagua, New Guinea.

March 26
1917 — Capt Percy Cherry, 26 Bn, awarded the VC for his actions at Lagincourt, France.
1917 — Light Horse Anzac mounted Div enters Gaza in Egypt by breaking the Turkish line from the eastern flank and were then forced to withdraw when the British infantry were held up.

March 27
1918 — 3 and 4 Div form line in front of Germans at Amiens, France.

March 28
1918 — Sgt Stanley McDougall, 47 Bn, awarded the VC for his actions in the Battle for Dernancourt, France.
1941 — HMAS Vendetta, Perth and Stuart take part in the Battle of Cape Matapan, Italy.
1945 — Diggers capture Soraken Peninsula, Bougainville.
