1944 — Japanese POWS break out of Cowra camp.

1914 — The Australian government is allocated its first WW1 task by the Imperial government to secure German New Guinea.
1915 — Battles for Lone Pine and Sari Bair begin.
1945 — Enola Gay drops the atom bomb on Hiroshima, Japan.
1950 — HMAS Warramunga leaves for Korea.
1973 — #Rifle Coy Butterworth.

1915 — Allies land at Suvla Bay. Light Horse units attack at the Nek, Steele’s, Quinn’s and Pope’s Posts, Gallipoli.
1945 — 7 Div’s assault on Balikpapan ends.

August 8
1900 — NSW and Victorian contingent departs Sydney for Boxer War in China.
1915 — LCpl Leonard Keysor, 1 Bn, awarded the VC for his actions at Lone Pine trenches, Gallipoli.
1916 — Diggers in the battle of Mouquet Farm, Western Front
1918 — Lt Alfred Gaby, 28 Bn, awarded the VC for his actions east of Villers-Bretonneux. Battle of Amiens begins.
1938 — #C&SC.
1945 — Russia enters the war in the Pacific by declaring war in the Japanese.

1915 — Cpl Alexander Burton, 7 Bn, (posthumous award); Cpl William Dunstan, 7 Bn; Pte John Hamilton, 3 Bn; Capt Alfred Shout, 1 Bn (posthumous award); Lt William Symons, 7 Bn; and Lt Fredrick Tubb, 7 Bn, awarded VCs for their actions at Lone Pine trenches, Gallipoli.
1918 — Pte Robert Beatham, 8 Bn, posthumously awarded the VC for his actions at Roseieres, east of Amiens.
1942 — HMAS Canberra sunk in the battle of Savo Island.
1945 — Atom bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan.

1900 — Boxer rebellion in China ends.
1945 — Japanese forces surrender to Allied forces.
1952 — B Coy 3RAR lauches Operation Buffalo to capture Hill 75, Korea.

August 15
1944 — RAAF bombers cover landings in southern France.
1945 — VJ Day indicates the end of WW2.

August 16
1918 — Australian Flying Corps squadrons conduct raids on enemy forces on the other side of the Somme, France.

August 17
1914 — #3 Tpt Sqn.
1966 — Mortar attack on Australian base at Nui Dat, Vietnam.
1982 — #5/6RVR.

August 18
1966 — 1 Aust Task Force in battle of Long Tan. D Coy 6RAR awarded the US Presidential Unit Citation.

August 19
1914 — Australian Expeditionary Force sails to capture German positions in the Pacific and to destroy wireless installations.
1942 — Elements of 7 Div arrive in Port Moresby, Papua.
1943 — Japanese abandon positions at Mt Tambu and Kominatun, New Guinea.

August 20
1901 — Australians capture Boer wagon train at Wolmaranstad, South Africa.
1918 — The Australian Corps prepares to continue the allied advance south of the Somme River, France.
1941 — 1st Polish (Carpathian) Bde relieves 18 Bde at Tobruk.
1951 — 3RAR conducts patrol operations in Imjin Salient, Korea.
1969 — 1ATF concludes three months of intensive operations around Dat Do Village, Vietnam.

1943 — Australians capture Komiatum Ridge, New Guinea, from Japanese forces.

August 22
1918 — Australians push into enemy territory at Chivigny, France.
1942 — 18 Bde lands at Milne Bay, New Guinea.

August 23
1918 — Lt William Donovan Joynt, 8 Bn, awarded the VC for his actions at Herleville Wood, France. Lt Lawrence McCarthy, 16 Bn, awarded the VC for his actions near Madame Wood, France.
1943 — 15 and 29 Bdes move toward Japanese positions at Salamaua, New Guinea.

August 24
1942 — Allied naval fleet inflicts heavy damage on Japanese ships east of the Solomon Islands.

August 25
1942 — Diggers supported by US engineers defend Milne Bay, New Guinea, against Japanese.

August 26
1916 — 6 Bde attacks German forces at Mouquet Farm, France.
1918 — Allies break Hindenburg Line.
1942 — RAAF 75, 76, 30 and 22 Sqns in action at Milne Bay, Kokoda and Buna. Japanese forces advance to Isurava on the Kokoda Track, New Guinea.

1915 — Second attack by Australians on Hill 60, Gallipoli.
1918 — LCpl Bernard Gordon, 41 Bn, awarded the VC for his actions at Fargny Wood, France.

August 28
1916 — 4 Bde continues the attack on Mouquet Farm.
1942 — Australians at Milne Bay hold against a heavy Japanese attack.
1945 — Australian destroyers enter Tokyo Bay.

August 29
1915 — 9LH and 10LH begin an advance to secure Hill 60, Gallipoli.
1918 — Allied forces begin the battle of Mont St Quentin.
1919 — Sgt Samuel Pearse, Sadlier-Jackson’s Bde, awarded the VC for his actions with British forces in north Russia.
1942 — Pte Bruce Kingsbury, 2/14 Bn, awarded the VC posthumously for his actions at Isurava, New Guinea.
1950 — #21 Const Regt

August 30
1915 — 2Lt Hugo Throssell, 10LH, awarded the VC for his actions at Hill 60.
1942 — Japanese advance halts at fighter airstrip. This was the furthest point south achieved by Japanese land forces. Diggers in battle of Alam el Kalfa, North Africa.

August 31
1918 — Pte George Cartwright, 33 Bn, awarded the VC for his actions at Rood Wood, France. Mont St Quentin, France, captured by allied forces.
1942 — Australians begin offensive at Milne Bay.
1950 — HMAS Sydney and Tobruk sail for Korea.
1981 — #2/3FER.
