THE Australian Federation Guard (AFG) has been stepping out for good causes lately, and getting plenty of accolades.

Following their busy APEC schedule where the AFG were called upon to welcome foreign dignitaries to Australia, the guard members have hung up their formal dress and drill routines to hit the streets for charity.

In September they dispersed throughout Canberra raising funds for the annual Legacy Week Badge Appeal collecting an impressive $18,031 in donations.

President of Legacy ACT Mr Brian Edwards thanked the AFG for their overwhelming support and enthusiasm, and said he was pleasantly surprised by the generosity displayed by the Canberra community.

“This year’s fundraising exceeded the 2006 efforts and without the efforts of the ADF, this year certainty wouldn’t have been as much of a success,” he said.

Following this, the AFG visited sick children at Randwick Children’s Hospital, Westmead Children’s Hospital and the Royal North Shore Hospital.

They presented the kids with show bags containing tri-service memorabilia such as stickers, balloons, caps, drink bottles, rulers and pens, which brought a smile to the faces of the kids.

AFG member and charity organiser Bdr Brad Giles said his colleagues were excited by the opportunity to help children.

“It was a great feeling to give something back to the community.

“To feel like the AFG can contribute in other ways than strictly ceremonially,” he said.
