MEMBERS of the 1RAR band have played a role in supporting the goodwill campaign promoting the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) message of peace across Timor-Leste.

The band, made up of 13 musicians with a variety of musical backgrounds, conducted a three-week tour for the benefit of Anzac Battle Group troops as well as the local population. Band Liaison Officer Maj Graeme Wren said the band received a great response to its performances.

“The band members arrived with the Tour de Force, and after supporting the civilian entertainers stayed for two weeks to do more concerts in support of the ISF community engagement campaign and to support the troops,” Maj Wren said.

“They travelled extensively across Timor, predominantly outside of Dili to the more remote areas.”

More than 1400 Timorese attended the concerts, with more than 400 at one concert alone.

“We also had local bands participate during one of the concerts outside of Dili and the locals told me they loved the concerts and that they were just what was needed for their people,” Maj Wren said.

“It’s great to be able to showcase the Army in a different light, and to provide support and morale for the locals and the troops on the ground. It’s a welcome change to their routines here.”

Music Director Capt Andrew Ryder said it was a very busy few weeks for the band, “but it’s a passion for these guys and girls and I don’t think they could see themselves doing anything else”.

“Their experiences here in Timor have been insightful. The Timorese I think definitely appreciate the cross-cultural aspect,” Capt Ryder said.
