FOUR resourceful craftsmen from the 5RAR Workshop left most of the field in their wake when they raced their pedal-powered paddle-wheel craft at the Lions’ Beer Can Regatta in Darwin in the NT.

The crew pedalled their craft – a bit rough around the edges but still mechanically sound – through a flotilla of sinking and cheating teams to finish second overall and first in the open water category at the annual charity event.

The journey to race-day was just as hectic as the race itself, as the team designed and their vessel in just two weeks.

“The design came out of my head from day to day,” said the craft’s designer, Cfn Lloyd Rees. “We had limited funds, limited time and were still building it up to the last minute.”

Regatta coordinator Lt Gary Thompson said the crew had done brilliantly to get the craft seaborne.

“Because of the efforts of the workshop, we’ve attracted the interest of other 1 Bde units and expect to see a much greater military participation next year,” he said.

“The challenge has been sent out, and I’m sure that crews from across Robertson Barracks will answer the call.

“With greater preparation and planning time, we also hope to raise a few thousand dollars for Lions next year.”

5RAR and 7RAR soldiers descended on Mindil Beach with their families for a day of activities –including a tug-o-war and thong throwing – as part of the Beer Can Regatta.
