WHAT do you do when faced with a squadron of light cavalry armed and mounted in patrol vehicles demanding to pass?
For the solitary police officer tasked to challenge the procession as part of a recent Freedom of Entry at Gawler, north of Adelaide, discretion proved the better part of valour.
“I didn’t stand much of a chance stopping those guys even if I wanted to,” he said to onlookers after allowing the parade to pass.
3/9 Light Horse (South Australian Mounted Rifles) exercised its right of entry to Gawler as part of the town’s celebrations of 150 years of local government.
Hundreds of onlookers watched as mechanical horsepower mixed it with the more traditional variety, courtesy of riders from the Barossa Light Horse Historical Association.
OC 3/9LH (SAMR) Maj Dave Edmonds said: “The reaction and support we received from the community was fantastic – and the horses certainly stole the show amongst the crowd.”
The unit recently made the transition from APCs to Light Cavalry Patrol Vehicles.
