SOLDIERS have been visible on Sydney’s streets and waterways as they provide security for the 15th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ meeting from September 2-9
Leading up to the APEC summit, the Special Operations Task Group conducted high-speed watercraft training in and around Sydney Harbour.
Reservists from all over Australia have also converged on Sydney to form a Security Task Group for the meeting of delegates from 21 nations.
They are among about 1500 ADF personnel involved in Operation Deluge, the ADF’s support to NSW Police for security during the APEC summit.
The STG, in support of the police, is conducting low-risk search and security checks of vehicles and buildings.
On August 30, Op Deluge commander Brig Andrew Smith signed a memorandum of understanding that formalised the accepted arrangements for the security support to the NSW Police. Attorney-General Philip Ruddock witnessed the signing.
To minimise disruption to the public during the APEC meeting, the NSW Government has declared September 7 a public holiday for Sydney residents.
