Army was declared the champion Service for touch football within South Queensland region after winning three of the four finals at the inter-Service carnival on July 19 at Gallipoli Barracks at Enoggera.

The tournament was conducted to determine the champion service in the South Queensland region, but also to select training squads to represent at the ADF touch nationals at RAAF Base Williamstown in late October.

Army beat Air Force 8-5 in the women’s open final with Lt Emma Rhule named player of the final.
The men’s open final also went Army’s way 10-0 against Air Force. Player of the final was Cpl Dave Walsh.

In the men’s over-40s, Army just edged Air Force 4-3 after a drop-off, with WO1 Mark Reid named player of the final.

Air Force reversed that trend in the men’s over-30s with a 3-2 win thanks to the efforts of Cpl Troy Dawson (Air Force) who was named player of the final.

Queensland Police Service teams joined Army and Air Force in the tournament. The morning consisted of round robin games, where teams played each other once. The afternoon consisted of inter-Service games.

“The tournament was enjoyed by all and was a successful event,” Capt Phil Corkeron, the South Queensland Defence Force Touch Association president said.

“Games throughout the day were played to a high standard with high levels of sportsmanship and fair play displayed by all,” he said.
