SOLDIERS from the 9 Bde formed part of a tri-service royal guard to honour the departure of South Australian Governor Marjorie Jackson-Nelson on July 27.
Brig Tim Hanna, Army Area Representative-SA and Commander 9 Bde, and Maj Peter Reynolds, an Honorary Aide-de-Camp to the Governor, also attended the ceremony.
“I have had the pleasure of providing support to the Governor in the performance of her vice-regal duties at a range of functions ranging from investiture ceremonies, official openings, award presentations, dinners and numerous functions,” Maj Reynolds said.
“Marjorie Jackson-Nelson is a remarkable lady who captured the hearts of the South Australian public in her role as Governor, and she will be solely missed.
“Her official farewell proved to be a very emotional day, with many tears flowing amongst her staff, which was indicative of the high regard and strong relationship that she had formed during her appointment.”
Mrs Jackson-Nelson, affectionately known as “our Marj” in South Australia, was appointed Governor in 2001 and is well known throughout Australia for her outstanding athletic achievements, and for her work in raising money for leukaemia research after leukaemia claimed her husband, Olympic cyclist Peter Nelson, in 1977.
Nicknamed the Lithgow Flash after the NSW town in which she was brought up, Marjorie Jackson won two Olympic gold medals and seven Commonwealth Games gold medals. |
