One of the last Leopard crews share their views (in the order in which they are pictured) on the tank:
Tpr James Moore, operator, has been with 1 Armd Regt for two-and-a-half years.
“All the excitement at first was about the new tank coming in, but now that the Leopard is going we realise how much we will miss it. It’s easy to say a tank is a tank but they are both very different,” he said.
Tpr Brian Colley, gunner, has been with 1 Armd Regt for four years. “It’s a great feeling to be the last one to fire the tank and hit the target. It’s our day to shine and set up the vehicle which has done the regiment proud for 30 years. It’s great to come out and still hit targets.
Losing the Leopard feels like breaking up with a girlfriend. The Leopard means a lot to the guys that have been in the regiment for a while.
Cpl Nicholas Zerafa, crew commander, has been with 1 Armd Regt for about seven years and has been a crew commander for nearly three years. “I have a lot of fond memories of the Leopard.
It’s a privilege and an honour to fire the last round from the vehicle. It’s an end of an era for a lot of people so it’s good to be representing the regiment in this position,” he said.
Tpr Craig Hancock, driver, has been with 1 Armd Regt for three years. “The experience as the last driver has been pretty good and the highlight has been the last roar of the old girl.
It was good to see her go out and hit the target. It shows she’s still got it,” he said.
