TEAMWORK was the name of the game for a mixed company of reservists deployed on Exercise Talisman Saber.

Ninety-eight soldiers and seven officers from 4 and 5 Bde spent eight days in Shoalwater Bay Training Area to provide security for a US logistics battalion during the bilateral exercise.

Their deployment in the field from June 20-28 supported 3 Bde.

“There was good interaction, it was good to see how the Americans worked,” Lt Tom Fink, 5/6RVR, said. “The boys were pretty keen to play.”

Reservists involved in the exercise were drawn from 5/6RVR, 8/7RVR, 4/3RNSWR, 1/19RNSWR, 2/17RNSWR and 4/19PWLH.

“There were a fair few students, police and prison officers, and a lot of tradies as well,” Lt Fink said.

All the soldiers from 5 Bde were members of the High Readiness Reserve.

The diggers patrolled, conducted vehicle check points and provided rear area security – roles they would perform overseas as HRR volunteers.

“This was something on the side, another task on top of the Solomon Island deployment,” Lt Fink said.

“We had no problem filling it.”

CSM of B Coy 4/3RNSWR WO2 Detlef Jansen said the reservists made a good impression on 3 Bde.

“They performed extremely well … the standard across the board was excellent,” WO2 Jansen said.

“It was a very successful week for the boys … I predict we will get more soldiers the next time.”
