TPR Joshua Porter, who died in the crash of Black Hawk 221, was the inspiration behind a study into lead which won a Defence Safety Award in Canberra on June 18.

Defence’s commitment to safety was evident even at the awards ceremony, which began with the delivery of a safety brief.

Capt Sharryn Batt was selected over 10 other entries to win the Best Individual Contribution to Health and Safety for her inorganic lead safety education package. Capt Batt said Tpr Porter had approached her and enquired about the health effects of lead.

“Sadly, the person responsible for my involvement with lead was taken from us in the Black Hawk that crashed into the Pacific Ocean in November last year,” she said.

“Tpr Porter is woven into my entire experience with lead. I could always count on him for his help, information and encouragement and I am grateful that he has led me to this path.”

Army’s other award winner, Maj Michael Tyquin, received a commendation for his outstanding contribution to OH&S.

CDF ACM Angus Houston attended the ceremony and proudly presented the awards to the recipients.

“Nothing is more important than ensuring that we have a safe and healthy workplace for all of our people in Defence,” he said.
