DEFENCE Touch Association Warriors were undefeated champions in the mixed open division of the NSW Country Championships.
The Warriors beat six other teams during the competition at Dubbo on May 25-26.
Most teams train for months for the premier event on the NSW touch calendar, but the ADF team only had a two-day training camp at Randwick Barracks to prepare.
The division was well-contested with 15 teams competing in four pools.
On the first day of competition, the Warriors defeated Nelson Bay 4-2, Albion Park 4-3 and Dubbo 10-9 to finish on top of their pool.
In the sudden-death format on day two they disposed of Wollongong 8-4 in the quarter-final and Griffith 5-1 in the semi-final. The semi-final game was an exceptional effort by the team as Griffith was the 2006 mixed open champion.
The grand final game was played between ADF Warriors and Newcastle City. Strong performances by Player of the Final Pte Manu Wakely, LS Lee Harnden and Flt-Lt Zoe Kennedy helped the Warriors gain ascendancy early in the game.
Newcastle City struck back late in the game, but the Warriors were never headed and won comfortably 5-2.
At the grand final presentation, Sgt Ivan PetroVictoria and Mr John Samin were selected for NSW Country representation.
