Ishmael Beah had his childhood traumatically torn from him.

At the age of 13, after months of living on the run to escape the violence of Sierra Leone’s civil war, he was found by government troops and pressured into taking up arms through coercion and drugs.

For the next two years killing was “a daily activity” before UN workers removed him, first to Guinea, and then to New York.

His graphic and detailed story has been both praised for highlighting the plight of child soldiers and questioned by others as to the validity of all of his claims. Either way, an interesting read.
