IN six months Overwatch Battle Group (West) 2 troops worked with the people of southern Iraq on essential reconstruction projects that will last a lifetime.

Road works, improvements to power supplies and school facility upgrades are among 55 projects completed, underway or scoped.

During the deployment the Battle Group’s Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) team setup projects and their success, generally carried out by local contractors and labour, helped attract investment to the region.

Projects also included the completion of the largest CIMIC project in southern Iraq, a $1 million pedestrian bridge in As Samawah in the Al Muthanna province. The bridge replaced a temporary floating pontoon structure giving locals safe access to mosques, businesses and the markets.

Other projects included the construction of a blood bank building at Al Khidh in Al Muthanna and new tanks to improve the supply of water to locals in the Al Dhahrah village.

In Dhi Qar province some of the Battle Group projects included an electricity transformer to improve the power supply at Sayyid ‘Abd and work on new school facilities at Al Najem.
