PRIME Minister John Howard has announced that a memorial to Australian Ppeacekeepers will be built on Anzac Parade in Canberra.
With an initial grant of $200,000, the project will commemorate the proud tradition of service and sacrifice of Australia’s peacekeepers.
Mr Howard said the new memorial would be a fitting acknowledgement of the professionalism and dedication of past and present peacekeepers and the families and loved ones who had supported them.
“Today, peacekeeping remains an important role, with the ADF, the AFP and civilians serving our country with distinction as members of important peacekeeping missions around the world, most notably in Timor and the Solomon Islands,” he said.
Australian Peacekeeper and Peacemaker Veterans Association National President Paul Copeland said the memorial would commemorate not only the service of ADF and AFP personnel who have served in peacekeeping operations, but also the valour, courage and sacrifice of those veterans.
“It will truly encompass modern peacekeeping operations by being a living memorial and fitting tribute to those who have served the world to ensure peace and security,” Mr Copeland said.
It will be up to the Australian Peacekeeping Memorial Comm-ittee to raise additional funds and choose a final design.
