“My job is to bring you back safely.” They were the words of HMAS Anzac’s Commanding Officer to his INTERNATIONAL security and the ADF’s capacity to respond were discussed by distinguished military experts at an international forum at ADFA on May 15-16.

The ADF has been engaged in the highest level of operational commitment since the Vietnam War.

Operating with coalition partners and other government agencies, the troops have provided an integrated response to the global war on terrorism and to the delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Given the current operational tempo of the military, an international panel of experts gathered at the forum to discuss the theme “The Future ADF – learning from the past, planning for the future”.

During the conference, delegates discussed trends in international security over the next 20 years, and the ADF’s capacity to contribute to any national or multinational response.

Distinguished military practitioners, military leaders, and academics were present at the forum, which was co-hosted by the Australian Defence College and the Royal United Services Institute of Australia. Among the list was CA Lt-Gen Peter Leahy.

In his address he said the future Army would be established to better deal with a complex and increasingly lethal environment. “It will ensure we can work across a broad spectrum of conflict, he said. “The Hardened and Networked Army is all about ensuring the Army is survivable, durable and sustainable in order to cope with the modern, complex battlefield.”

During the forum, concepts of all three services were outlined. This included the Future Maritime Operating concept, the Hardened and Networked Army and the Future Air and Space Operating concept.
