INNOVATION and excellence in the fields of occupational health and safety were rewarded at the Army Safety Awards held in Canberra on May 10.

CA Lt-Gen Peter Leahy and RSM-A WO Kevin Woods presented the awards. Lt-Gen Leahy said he was proud of people in the Army who were committed to making sure the workplace was safe for soldiers.

“They’ve shown such great skills and initiative. They’ve been innovative in what they’ve achieved and I’m really proud that they have been recognised for their performance,” he said.

The major individual award winner was Capt Sharryn Batt (see story at left).

The Defence Intelligence Training Centre won the category for best workplace health and safety management system for developing quality programs and systems aimed at achieving a safer workplace, heightened awareness of Occupational Health and Safety issues and ongoing safety training for its members.

The rehabilitation and return to work award was won by 2HSB for establishing a framework of high-quality programs and services aimed at reducing the human and financial costs associated with illness and injury to ADF members, including a return to work program, a military occupational rehabilitation program, medical transition seminars, and compensation services.
