CA trophy for AFL

Edition 1167, May 31, 2007

A NEW award for AFL players who display courage, initiative and teamwork on the field will be presented at the end of each round.

Launched by CA Lt-Gen Peter Leahy and AFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Demetriou, the award recognises what has long been a tradition of AFL players displaying the qualities that can be seen in our serving members.

“This exciting competition builds on this tradition, showcasing the Army’s core values of courage, initiative and teamwork that can be seen in every AFL match,” Lt-Gen Leahy said.

“The Army Award is for an on-field act; an act that is team lifting, game changing, and one which may require a player to put his body on the line.”

Each week, three acts by players, such as game-breaking smothers, tackles and shepherds, that best display these Army values will be nominated for the football public who can vote for their favourite on the www.afl.com.au website.

“The AFL is delighted to announce the inaugural AFL Army Award, in partnership with the Australian Army,” Mr Demetriou said.

“Round 1 winner, West Coast Eagles Daniel Kerr’s effort in applying a game-winning tackle on Jarrad McVeigh is a prime example of acts that will be recognised by this exciting award during the 2007 Toyota AFL Premiership season,” he said.

At the end of the home and away season, the AFL All-Australian Selection Committee will shortlist the 22 weekly winning acts to six nominations which will then be voted on by the public.

The winning player will receive the AFL/Army Award of a cash prize and trophy to be presented at the 2007 All Australian presentation dinner.
