OVERWATCH Battle Group (West) 3 soldiers were formally farewelled at a parade at Robertson Barracks on May 10 that was attended by more than 1000 ADF personnel as well as family and friends.

The 520 members of OBG-(W)-3 will deploy to Iraq during the next few weeks.

RAdm Rowan Moffitt, Deputy Chief Joint Operations, reviewed the parade, which also included soldiers deploying as part of the Australian Army Training Team Iraq, whose job it is to train the newly formed Iraqi Army.

A feature of the parade was Battle Group Tiger Trooping the Colour of 5RAR, which recently rededicated itself to the original Queen’s and Regiment Colours.

The parade also provided the opportunity to present OBG(W)3 soldiers with medals acknowledging earlier deployments to Iraq.

CO OBG-(W)-3 Lt-Col Jake Ellwood said the soldiers had worked hard over the past two months preparing for this deployment.

“The men and women of OBG(W) 3 have been working tirelessly to prepare for their impending deployment,” he said.

At the conclusion of the parade, 5RAR Association President Roger Wainwright spoke to the diggers about the tradition they had inherited from the former Tiger Battalion and how all former members were excited about Battle Group Tiger’s deployment to Iraq.

OBG(W)3 is comprised primarily of members from Darwin’s 5RAR, 1CSR, 1CSSB, 1CER, 2 Cav Regt, 8/12 Mdm Regt, 1 Armd Regt and 1 Bde HQ.

The Battle Group will be based at Tallil Air Base where it will undertake a security overwatch role in the Al Muthanna and Dhi Qar Provinces.
