CA Lt-Gen Peter Leahy joined families and friends in welcoming home the final group of 1RTF soldiers from Afghanistan on April 22.

About 90 soldiers, mostly from the newly-formed 7RAR, returned home to Darwin following their six month rotation.

“These men and women have done an outstanding job in the service to their nation,” Lt-Gen Leahy said.

“In a difficult and demanding operational environment they have performed with distinction and deserve our thanks.”

Pte Matthew Stevens, 7RAR, said he enjoyed his first deployment but was happy to be back.

“It’s great to be home. I never thought I would say it but I’m actually happy to be back in Darwin.”

LCpl Luke McCallum said he would have fond memories of the operation.

“It was good to learn the culture and different ways the local people live, and it was good to help them out,” LCpl McCallum said.

The diggers helped the people of Oruzgan province by improving infrastructure and providing trade training.

CO 1RTF Lt-Col Mick Ryan said a key ingredient to the success of the mission was the junior leaders.

“The corporals in the RTF were an exceptional bunch and they were the real foundation of our success over there,” Lt-Col McCallum said.

The CO also attributed the success to the development of combined arms teams and the support of the families, a sentiment echoed by the CA.

“I would like to also thank the families of those personnel returning for their support and understanding,” Lt-Gen Leahy said.

“They are the often unsung heroes whose support is the foundation on which the Army is built.”
